Men’s Hockey Earns MIAC Playoff Berth With 2-1 Win Over No. Fourteen Saint John’s


Gusties celebrate JT Walters’ game-winner

ST. PETER, Minn. – With Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff hopes jeopardized, the Gustavus men’s hockey emerged through with a solid 60-minute effort for taking down No. 14-ranked and beginning Saint John’s University 2-1 Wednesday evening during senior nighttime at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

The Gusties, currently 10-11-3 overall and 9-6 within the MIAC, switch within three points of the Johnnies in the conference standings as well as clinch a spot in the conference playoffs, ending a three-year conference postseason drought.

Fitting on senior night, JT Walters recorded the actual game-winning goal, his first during Black and Gold, during 16:53 on the minute period. His tally afforded the Gusties a 2-0 lead moving into the final frame.

Gustavus forced the pace throughout the first 30 minutes, claiming a 26-10 picture on goal advantage over a Johnnies, including a 17-5 mark in the 1st period.

Van Sullivan put the home team to the board just past the nearly point of the first period, ending a backhand off a hurry for his sixth of year. Nick Sheak and Walters were credited having assists.

The Johnnies added an empty web goal to cut the Gustie produce 2-1 with just 14 seconds remaining, but it was too little already happened.

The Gusties went 0-1 on the power engage in and were successful getting rid of off two Saint John’azines power play opportunities. Joe Amsden improved his record to 7-7-1 around the season, notching 20 saves within net.

Tomorrow evening, Gustavus closes out there its regular season agenda, looking for the sweep within St. Cloud, Minn. at the All natural herb Brooks National Hockey Facility. Puck drop between the Gusties and Johnnies is about for 7 p.meters.
