ST. PETER, Minn. C The Gustavus men’s soccer team shut out Macalester College 2-0 Saturday mid-day at Gustie Soccer Field over the regular season finale for you to earn the No. 2 seedling and a first round cya in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Convention Playoffs.
On senior day, elderly Alex Wilson (Ashland, Wis.) opened the scoring to your Gusties, heading in a Matt Gibbons (Fy., Ontario, Minn.) corner kick to tally his second game-winning goal throughout as many games and his final of the season.
“What an excellent first mission from Wilson, who is really performing well,” Head Trainer Mike Middleton commented. “And, a great tennis ball from Gibbons to set up that possibility.”
Gustavus outshot the Scots 6-4 and 3-2 throughout corner kick opportunities, making the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Macalester fired back in the second half, but to no avail since Gustie goalkeeper Matt Bateman (Savage, Minn.) made three saves in goal for his second-straight shutout and sixth of the season and Will Richards (So., Hudson, Wis.) scored their second goal of the season by using help from Kyle Monson (Jr., Verona, Wis.) to give the Dark and Gold a 2-0 cushion at the 82nd minute.
“The team isn’t only playing well, but really spending so much time for the performances,” Middleton stated. “We are now 9-2 in the last eleven games, and the lads are zooming. A second place finish from the MIAC betters last years 3rd place. Now we have to refocus on the playoffs. It’s great to obtain a bye in the first game, and to host the play-off match is a real bonus. We need to have fun with the win, but also be able to said aside to concentrate on the play-offs. And, as I keep on saying C what happens happens to hotdogs!”
Gustavus concludes the standard season with a 13-5 overall history and a 7-3 mark during nba play. After receiving a primary round bye, the Gusties could host a semifinal matchup Mondy, Nov. 1. Learn more In this article.
