During a third-down play in Temple’s intrasquad scrimmage about Saturday at Penn’s Franklin Field, a number of safeties – senior Delvon Randall, graduate scholar Rodney Williams, junior Benny Walls, and redshirt sophomore Keyvone Bruton , were all on the field.
Randall returns as the third-year starter after earning first-team Us Athletic Conference honors, documenting 80 tackles and grabbing four interceptions in He played alongside Sean Chandler, who made 24 career starts and intercepted 15 passes from 2014-17. Without Chandler, who is fighting to stay on the Los angeles Giants’ roster after signing as being an undrafted free agent in May well, Temple has a spot to load at safety.
Instead of using an established depth chart with first-teamers, second-teams et cetera, the Owls use an “Above the Line” collection that names people your coaching staff considers able to contribute in games. Defending coordinator Andrew Thacker said Randall, Williams, Walls and Bruton are above the range and graduate safety Jyquis Jones is in consideration for playing period as he returns from a personal injury he sustained last time.
“I think we probably have six to eight safeties that would start at a large amount of places, and we’re simply just trying to get the packages…and all the things that we do so we can get this option roles,” coach He Collins said.
Bruton made his very first appearance of in the remaining regular season game against Tulsa on special teams. Also, he played in the Owls’ next online game, their victory against The southwest International University in the Gasparilla Bowl.
This preseason, he is working on understanding the playbook more and learning how to play in Dime as well as Nickel packages. Bruton said spring season training camp was a significant period for him to receive better.
“The main thing was just I finally started trusting in myself, just having confidence in myself along with confidence in my ability on the top of just relentlessly studying the playbook together with watching film so I can placed myself in a good position when it was time to help make those big plays,Inches Bruton said.
“The development, improvement regarding Keyvone Bruton has been amazing,” Thacker stated. “He is as improved as anyone for the team from last year to the present year.”
Thomas missed the very last four games of using an injury. After playing in just about every game on special competitors in he played seven in every of the next two conditions.
Senior cornerback Rock Ya-Sin said Thomas is actually a “baller” who’ll contribute as long as the guy stays healthy.
“[Thomas]’s able to can occur the field and play health and safety, but he also hits just like a linebacker so he gives us chance to fit the run whilst play the pass,” youngster linebacker Shaun Bradley said. “So it’s going to actually benefit us.
Walls has enjoyed 24 career games plus served as a backup basic safety in all 13 games during but he has never started. Past season, he made 21 takes up and forced two fumbles. That preseason, he is working on his dealing with technique, focusing on fundamentals for example keeping his head upwards.
Williams joined the Owls in May perhaps after four seasons in Syracuse University, where he made 125 tackles and two interceptions in Thirty three games. Former Owls defensive supports coach Francis Brown recruited Williams as they played for Cherry Hill Rest of the world High School in South New jersey. Williams chose Syracuse over offers within the University at Buffalo and also Temple, according to Rivals.net.
In high school, Williams played against Forehead players from South Hat like Chandler and original wide receiver Adonis Jennings.
“They’ve been extremely successful during their college employment, so that’s exciting to see and now that I can come back and play with those guys, it is cool,” Williams said.
Across the complete defense, communication has been the biggest improvement, Thacker said. The Owls’ preventive schemes are largely unaffected from Randall said, but they’re trying to play faster because they’re more comfortable with concepts than they were last year.
As Brow begins scout periods for its season opener on June. 1 against Villanova this week, Williams claims the Owls have a “deep” group with safety.
“We’re still trying to find all of our roles, but all we’ve been really focused on is getting 1 % better and then coming out the following and doing everything we can individually,” Williams said. “And to help us as a whole get to our company goal that we want, and also everything individual will take care of per se.”
